CURVED PICTURE SPACE PAINTINGS

development of the space

Curved picture space is based on cosmology and chaos theory. Reflecting on three aspects resulted in the space - attraction to a relative centre (gravity), recursion across scales (chaos theory) and rotational symmetry (a mathematic characteristic of some images). Visually the combination of these elements is a spiral. That is to say, a shape generates the picture space.

The use of shapes to generate picture space is practically unexplored. I can ask how about a tetrahedron shaped picture space, but as yet no one can provide an example of such an image. Therefore, the curved space works are an object lesson that painting continues to generate unknown territories.

Four sections of my work on curved space paintings are shown here - development, first works, chaotic series and digitalia. These four periods are seen in the thumbnails on the right. It was seriously difficult developing the space because it was counter intuitive to the main modes of pictorial space - perspective and abstraction. So I had to unlearn everything I had gleened from years of painting. There were several sets of utter failures at getting what I wanted.
