HYBRID ARTWORKS

Hybrid artworks are cultural products that result from the influence of more than one culture. It is more usual to consider cultural output from a singular cultural point of view. However worldwide an understanding of cultural hybridisation is increasing. Wherever cultures have met for a shorter or longer period, interaction has taken place. Two main cultural orientations for me are Western European and Polynesian, however in hybrid locations an in-between cultural space is created where influences flow freely across boundaries, reinvigorate systems as feedback, mutate and otherwise distort hierarchies of 'parent' cultures.

Linked from this page and shown below are selected works that highlight a hybrid cultural approach. For academic discussions of nonlinearity and/or hybridity, email me.

projects

the DISTRICT OF LEISTAVIA welcomes you - enjoy your stay™ project for ISEA 2004.

wandering rocks/revolving doors logo animation for the international collaboration for the ReJoyce 2004 Festival in Dublin. The festival celebrates the centenary of Bloomsday. My project, shown here in a digital drawing (not a photograph) is called A Wandering Rock. It has two parts - part A is congealed and known as an agenbite of inwit; part B is distributed.

Part A uses the technique of reallage, or four dimensional collage. The piece is an intersection of diversity and is spatially interactive - dependent on proximity of the audience. It's appearance is also situation specific - it will not be the same in different locations.

Part B distributed consists of stickers of the same digital images used in part A. These stickers are distributed widely - attached to clothing or bags, or billboards - some of the distributed part moves around, but the congealed part always stays in one position.
